Rhythm Control Barcelona - A Story of Creation

Updated: Feb 3, 2020

If you've been to Barcelona and like collecting records then you've probably gone to, or at least heard of, Rhythm Control record shop. To refresh that precious memory, Rhythm Control is a record store and label based in an old commercial gallery space in the heart of Barcelona. The shop and label is run by DJ Bruce Lee, a lifelong collector and lover of music. All though there is much to be said about the Rhythm Control, not much has been written about the reasons and inspirations behind the start of this project. We look to owner DJ Bruce Lee for answers and commentary about founding one of the most iconic record shops in Barcelona.

Like most music aficionados, Lee's journey began when he was young. His mother would often have music playing throughout the course of his childhood. When he was 14 years old, Lee bought his first record. By the age of 17 Lee was enamored by electronic music and from there the rest is history. "I discovered house music in the old Nitsa Club. The resident DJ was DJ Sideral and when I started to buy records I wanted to find same sound he was playing." Says Lee in a reminiscing tone.

It's been a whopping 22 years of collecting records since Lee first started. He didn't even have proper DJ turntables for a few months at the beginning! He was playing his new records on his mother's Hi-Fi record player. Years later, Lee developed quite the collection and soon began to sell records as an online retailer on Discogs. An entire room in his apartment was dedicated to his collection, but soon he had to make room for his newborn daughter. Lee credits his wife for the idea of opening a brick and mortar record shop, saying "My wife told me: 'You must open a record store.' and I thought it was a good idea too." Now almost 4 years since opening day, Rhythm Control is a staple name in the scene due to its specific selection of techno, house, electro, idm, ebm, industrial, disco, and some reggae and dub.

DJ Bruce Lee's plans for the future include gigging, continuing to find awesome records for us music lovers to buy at the shop and adding some more releases to his label. We can't wait to see what's to come! If you guys every find yourselves in Barcelona we highly recommend hitting up Rhythm Control.
